Six people sentenced to die, lead a big march in Austin Saturday to try and put a stop to the death penalty. The exonerated, former death row inmates lead the 11th annual march from the capitol building. Together they spent nearly 50 years behind bars. They, along with their supporters, believe no matter what, people can change and deserve the right to do so.

Curtis McCarty was exonerated in 2007 after spending more than 20 years behind bars for a crime he didn’t commit. He says, “There’s no need to kill those men, when they come to get them in the end, they are simply chained, broken down men, defenseless, locked in this tiny cage unable to defend themselves. I know those men committed horrible crimes and I’m as offended as anybody else is. But it simply doesn’t serve a purpose. Those men were not a threat to anybody.”

The pen pal of Todd Willingham was also in the crowd of marchers. She was the first who investigated his innocence. Willingham is the father who was convicted of killing his three daughters in what was originally ruled as arson in 1991. He was convicted in 1992 and executed in 2004.
